Meditation - Yoga - Liberty, Peace, Love, Even Mindedness
The value to become still, to let the brain and body activities become calm, to be able to concentrate better is recognized today again. Meditation is the special kind of concentration directed toward God. God - a name for the sum of
all forces, the sum of all natural laws, and all worthwhile values. Many people experience a very personal, loving relationship with this ultimate Being. If you do not have this relationship, you might want to think of the summary of these
forces as universe.
To emerge in God is something, human beings of all times have striven after. Today we know from the sciences, too, that certain methods bring us closer to our boundless potential, of which we use a
small percentage only. Even a genius such as Einstein had used only 13 % of it.
With more advancement the outside problems are easier to master, many questions dissolve in inner knowledge, intuition and the power of decision
making, patience, perseverance and evenmindedness increases, also a higher ability to love people and the whole universe. The joy about everyone and everything rises more often. The knowledge about the meaning of the relations in our
universe and our own task in life becomes clearer, new perspectives open up. Our own inner healing powers for our immune system, our body, mind and soul, increase. After practicing Yoga with all the meditation exercises, which Paramahansa
Yogananda brought to the west since 1974, I experience these effects constantly.
An old prayer was taken into the united German prayer- and songbook “Gotteslob”, "The everlasting Jesus Prayer" (see down below). It is a
simple meditation form and is a good assistance to come closer to God and its nature. The effect is described and was experienced often. In "Sincere Narrations of a Russian Pilgrim" Emmanuel Jungclaussen – German only – tells
about the Jesusgebet (Jesus Prayer), widely used in the Russian Orthodox Church.
Deepak Chopra, an Indian physician in America, refers to this first form of meditation and calls it "Mindful Meditation". Louise L. Hay recommends in her new book: “I Can Do It” a similar form.
In the book "Photo Reading" from Paul R. Scheelen, he stresses, how differently we will be able to read, if we go with such a method into the alpha state. Scheelen points out that this technology is practiced in Yoga, Zen, Tai Chi and other eastern methods already for a long time. Excerpts from this book, with an additional fourth point from myself:
Our Brain Conditions:
•Awake condition = 12 - 23 cycles per second, beta
•Relaxed awakeness, ideal learning condition = 8 - 12 cycles per second, alpha
•Deep relaxation, inner conceptions, high creativity = 4 - 8 cycles per second, Theta.
•With high Yoga methods it is possible to stop the activity of the heart completely, which leads to the final union with the Divine. The result is
complete control over all the functions of the lifeforce and rejuvenation of the cells.
In case you have absolutely no relationship with God, you might nevertheless wish for yourself the values mentioned, which are attainable
through this techniques. Put these exercises into your life, just for a test!
Possible Operational Sequence of a Meditation:
•Prepare your body first: Breathe out
deeply, and then let the breath flow upwards from the belly, stomach and lung, count thereby, like it corresponds to you, between 6 and 20. Probable you will be able to increase the number by and by. Stop the breath, counting on the same
number, without forcing, very soft, and then breathe out on the same number again. Breathe in this form 3 to 12 times, as it sooths you.
•Tense and relax the body, each muscle from the feet upwards and feel, how the life energy
pulsates inside you. Larger muscles relax more easily; therefore it is good to start with them, so that you feel the energy by tensing and relaxing. Sequence: Left foot, right foot, left calf, right calf, left thigh, right thigh, left
buttocks, right buttocks, lower stomach, upper stomach, left hand, right hand, left lower arm, right lower arm, left upper arm, right upper arm, left chest, right chest, neck front, back, loosen up the face muscles completely. A smile
relaxes automatically these muscles. Hold it during the whole exercises and meditation and to a very large extent also in life. If you don’t feel after smiling, simply pull the mouth apart and look against the sky. Your will feel uplifted
right away. In addition you and your environment will be pleased and beside that, it decreases the formation of wrinkles! You can relax both in lying, and in sitting. I began with the lying form and have put away 40 cigarettes from one day
to the other. The alcohol I could let go shortly afterwards. In further consequence, learning too went amazingly well, even if I was not quite young anymore. I became more loving and all the characteristics specified above and also in the
Jesus-Prayer did unfold more and more.
Tension and relaxation exercises are used in the meantime also against Osteoporose.
•
Attitude and Meditation: Calm and relax your body, breath again several times, sit straight, spine upright, feet flat on the ground, chin parallel to it, hands on the thighs, palms upward, shoulders to the rear and somewhat pulled upwards, but nevertheless loosely, the internal view upward between the eye brows, on the Spiritual Eye. Jesus spoke of it, when he said: "The light of the body is the eye; therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light." – Lk 11, 34. We have lost this knowledge to a very large extent. In this age, as our mental forces awake again, meditation techniques make this experience available.
•Now observe your breath, without influencing it, and speak in conformity with the breath or the heartbeat a word or two. By guidance from Paramahansa Yogananda I observe the breath and use a word with the outgoing breath and one
word with the incoming breath. Take words, which correspond to your feeling, like "my God", as Saint Francis prayed, "Jesus", "Christ" or "mother", if you want to turn to the motherly aspect in God,
which found a marvelous expression in Maria, the mother of Jesus. Also the Rosary is good in this calm form to pray, but there are lot more words. Turn to God with your whole devotion. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." - Mt. 22,37.
•If your thoughts deviate, fetch them back, as you would fetch back a small boy, which ran away, with all love and much patience.
After some practicing
one becomes internally calm. It is good to stay in this peace as long as possible and talk with God as with a friend.
•
The Jesus Prayer is relatively long. I mention it however, because it represents the parallel to the
meditation exercises from the east, where the Christian origin lies also. Now, as striving for unity increases, this method found its way into the German prayer book. It originates however reliably from the ancient Christian times. Also
Paramahansa Yogananda stresses in its writings that Jesus taught the apostles such exercises and Saint Paul also speaks of it. It was lost though, because it was no longer generally possible to reach such depths. Theresa of Avila describes
it in "Interior Castle", but it is hard to describe these experiences. Here is a first method to experience these realms and therefore know, instead of believing only.
If you do not have any relationship with God,
repeat: peace, love, joy or another high value, which connects you with the universal good. It would be worth an attempt to address this being "God" though. Charles de Foucauld, a French officer, which led such a careless life
that they throw him out from school and military, sat down into the church and urged God: "God, if you are real, then prove it to me!" And God did! Charles felt Him so much, that he wanted only to lead a life as Jesus did. He
joined an order, but developed later his own way, living with the Tuaregs in the Sahara. The Little Sisters and Brothers are living after his model.
•You can think however in this time also about somewhat very beautiful, peaceful,
which feels good for your whole being, if at the beginning the thought on God is too strange for you.
Times for Meditation: If possible, after rising and in the evening
before going to sleep would be good times, you might start with 10 - 15 minutes and increase as you feel comfortable with it, but never omit. Some minutes are always possible and are better than nothing. Breathing deeply in the open air or
at least at an open window and doing the tension and relaxation exercises wakes the spirit, if it wants to make you believe you are tired. In case you are still on nicotine, you could inhale oxygen for the length of a cigarette with the
same intensity as you would inhale the poison. Perhaps you would feel right away, how good it does, much better than any smoke!

The Everlasting Jesus Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.
Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on us.
The beginnings of this prayer form go back into the time of the church fathers. The Jesus Prayer spread particularly in the Orthodox
Church in the East, however today it is also well known in the West.
This prayer is a meditation, in which the body is involved too. The whole person should be free from restlessness. One must be able to calm down. The
musculature should be completely relaxed. One repeats in conformity with the heart or with the breath incessantly: "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me", or: "Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on us". Thus one
emerges oneself into the presence of Jesus.
Not only emerging in God is supported by this constant calling of the name Jesus, but also the feeling of peace and reconciliation for all human beings, withdrawing the own interests
and getting evenmindedness. The Jesus Prayer is called from those, who practice it, a way to inner freedom. (Gotteslob, Catholic Prayer- and Songbook. Ed. bishops of Germany, Austria and the dioceses of Bolzano-Bressanone and Lüttich, Ulm:
